IP :- IP become the officially protocol for the internet in 1983, As the internet has evolved so has IP. there have been six version since its inception . we look at the latter three versions here.
version 4 : most network on the internet are currently using version 4. however , this version has significant shortcomings. the primary problem is that the internet address is only 32bits in length with the address space divide into different classes . with the rapid growth of the internet ,this addressing scheme cannot handle the projected numbers of users.
version 5 : version 5 was based on open system interconnection model. this version never went beyond the proposal level due to extensive layer changes and the projected expense.
version 6 : IETF has designed a new version called version 6. in this version , the only protocol that are changed are the ones in the network layer IPv4 becomes IPv6 .ICMPv4 become IGMPv6, IGMP and ARP are merged into ICMP V6 and RARP is deleted.
IPv6 also known as IPng { IP next generation }, uses 128bit {16byte}. address ,
how internet protocol work |
versus the 32bit {4bytes} address currently used in version 4. IPv6 can thereby accommodate a larger number of user in version 6 the packet format has been simplified yet at the same time it is more flexible to allow for the future addition of feature .
the new version support authentication , data integrity, and confidentiality at the network layer. it is design to handle the transmission of real time data such as audio video and can carry data from protocol IPng can also handle congestion and route discovery better than the current version
